Introduction to the Law Library: Borrowing & Lending

This guide will help familiarize students with the Law Library at Rutgers Law School.

Materials not available from the Law Library

Material at other Rutgers Libraries

Books or articles that are not in the Law Library’s collection can be obtained through the Rutgers Delivery Service or Interlibrary Loan. If you need books or articles from another Rutgers library, such as the Alexander library in New Brunswick, instead of visiting that library yourself, you can request the items to be delivered to your designated pick-up location.

Materials outside of Rutgers University Libraries

For materials that are not available at any Rutgers Library, you can request a book or article by clicking on “Interlibrary Loan” link from the Law Library website under “Faculty and students.” The first time you use the Interlibrary Loan System you need to register with the system. Once you have registered, you may fill out the online form with as much information about the book or article you need, and we will find it for you. Most book requests can be filled in one to two weeks. Articles and book chapters will be delivered as scanned digital copies.

You can also borrow books through E-ZBorrow & Uborrow. E-ZBorrow is the fastest way to request books as it search and request books from academic libraries in Pennsylvania and several surrounding states. Delivery usually takes 3-5 business days. UBorrow books come from Big Ten partner libraries and usually arrive within 7 business days

Borrowing

Current Rutgers students may borrow materials from the library. Please note, however, that many materials, such as law reports, journals, multivolume treatises, loose-leaf services, reserve materials do not circulate outside of the library. You can always use those non-circulation items within the library. When in doubt bring it to the Circulation Desk.

LOAN PERIOD

For all students, circulating books may be checked out for a full semester. All materials may be renewed unless recalled by another patron.
