Information Currency

Always use the "(i)" buttons to check the currency and coverage of the resource(s) you are using.

Especially with Landlord/Tenant reform, materials that are not up-to-date may not include any new processes and requirements, or for more recent sources, materials might not cover historical information that you might need. Some resources may offer descriptions or scope notes for quick guidance if the resource covers or excludes the topic you want to research.

Strategies | Best Practices for statutory research (e.g. NJ's Consumer Fraud Act)

  1. Take a look at the Table of Contents.
    1. Get the lay of the land,
    2. find definitions, purpose/findings, relevant sections
  2. Use the editorial enhancements!

    2. Other Citing Sources. Filter by content, find Secondary Sources, Regulations, and more.
    3. Shepardize! Use Shepard's to see if the caution is relevant to your jurisdiction or issue by
      1. narrow Shepard's report by jurisdiction, and/or
      2. narrow Shepard's report to just case law (Citing Decisions), and/or
      3. narrow Shepard's report by issue (search within)
